Romanian Opera Stars Debut in South Florida

By Robyn A. Friedman

Romanian husband-and-wife opera stars Florin Maris Hinsu, baritone, and Florina Maris Hinsu, soprano, will make their U.S. debut at a rare performance in Fort Lauderdale on Feb. 26.

The couple will appear as the Venetian Arts Society presents “Up Close and Personal” at the NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, where they will perform selections from the opera as well as Romanian folk music.

“The program is interactive, so there’s a conversation between the audience and the performers,” says William Riddle, executive director of the Venetian Arts Society. “It’s meant to be artistic, educational and social.”

The operatic couple will be introduced by opera legend Virginia Zeani, who made her debut in 1948 at age 22 as Violetta in Verdi’s La Traviata. Zeani now resides in West Palm Beach where, at age 89, she continues to teach the bel canto vocal style and repertory from her home.

“She’s really a legend in the opera world,” Riddle says. “In her day, she was the only real rival of Maria Callas.”

The event, which begins at 7:30 p.m., includes the performance and a champagne reception. Tickets are $45 for general admission, $30 for Museum and Venetian Arts Society Members and $60 for VIP seating. Advance reservations are required. Call 954-709-7447 or visit for information or to RSVP
