Globe-trotting Nicole Henry brings it home

By David Raterman
In a salon concert hosted Thursday night by the Venetian Arts Society at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, jazz and soul singer Nicole Henry performed in front of a sold-out auditorium.
Henry started her show with three songs about forlorn love. Then she took a break and laughed with the crowd, apologizing for the “male-bashing songs.” Her next songs were devoted to love and romance. Her ensemble include a cellist, a pianist, a guitarist and a percussionist.
A graduate of the University of Miami and long-time South Beach resident, Henry is celebrated for her interpretations of classics as well as her own originals. Debuting in 2004, she recently won a Soul Train Award for best traditional jazz performance.
During her MOAFL concert, Henry wore an evening gown designed by Marcello Vittoria Maison du Couture. Vittoria is a rising designer also based in South Florida.
Henry’s concert was followed by a champagne reception in the museum’s main lobby. While a harpist played, women, including former NBC 6 news anchor Julia Yarbough, modeled Vittoria’s evening gowns.
On Friday morning, Henry was scheduled to conduct “A Conversation with the Artist,” master class that the public could attend.
